SUMMARY:Eurecat presents VitiGEOSS platform at CIAEC24
DESCRIPTION:At the International ACE Congress of Oenology and Cava 2024 – CIAEC24\, Alex Pujol Garcia\, a researcher at Eurecat’s Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit\, presented the VitiGEOSS project\, an advanced digital platform designed to support sustainable vineyard management using data-driven technologies. The event was held the past November 15 in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia (Barcelona\, Spain). \nThe conference\, themed “Sensorization and AI: The Future of Oenology\,” highlighted the growing importance of integrating extensive sensor networks and artificial intelligence into winemaking processes. \n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Presentation: ACE Congress of Oenology and Cava 2024 (CIAEC24)\n 1 file(s) 4.28 MB\n \n \n Download\n \n \n \n\n\n\nPujol’s presentation at CIAEC24 focused on how VitiGEOSS leveraged tools based on artificial intelligence\, remote sensing\, in-field sensors\, and satellite Earth observation to improve vineyard operations. The platform\, available on demand\, offers capabilities like long-term weather forecasting\, monitoring crop phenology\, and assessing plant physiology\, including water requirements. These features allow winemakers to make informed decisions\, optimize vineyard performance\, and enhance sustainability. \nOne of the key aspects discussed was the platform’s ability to detect diseases early and generate alerts for targeted treatments\, reducing the use of resources and minimizing environmental impact. During the presentation\, Pujol also emphasized the decision-making tools incorporated into VitiGEOSS\, which assist in planning tasks such as harvesting and fieldwork while prioritizing resource efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. \n \nThe VitiGEOSS platform was validated throughout 2022 and 2023 collaboratively with renowned wineries\, including Familia Torres in Catalonia\, Symington in Portugal\, and Mastroberardino in Italy. \nThe conference was organized by the Catalan Enology Association (ACE)\, the College of Oenologists of Catalonia (CEEC) and the Vine and Wine Catalan Institute (INCAVI) and gathered experts providing significant perspective on the knowledge that oenologists need regarding how\, when\, where\, and why to incorporate sensorization into their work. \n

SUMMARY:Presenting four VitiGEOSS posters during the GiESCO Conference
DESCRIPTION:The VitiGEOSS project was represented during the 22nd GiESCO Conference (Group of International Experts for Cooperation on Vitivinicultural Systems) taking place from 17th – 20th of July at Cornell University in Ithaca\, NY. \nBoris Basile\, associate professor at the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II\, and Fernando Alves\, R&D Viticulture Manager at Symington Family Estates\, attended the event presenting VitiGEOSS as a key European project working for a greater sustainability and optimisation in wine operations. \nIn addition\, during the conference\, a total of 4 posters based on VitiGEOSS research were presented\, introducing the main results and achievements of the project. \nThe poster entitled “Vineyard innovative tools based on the integration of Earth Observation Services and in-field sensors”\, introduced the general overview of VitiGEOSS including information about the project’s solution for wine producers to boost vineyards’ sustainability and the five services offered by the VitiGEOSS platform. \nSecondly\, the poster “Use of Artificial Intelligence for the prediction of microbial diseases of grapevine and optimization of fungicide application”\, presented some results of the three cases studies of wine production carried out in Quinta do Bomfim (Portugal)\, L’Aranyó (Spain) and Mirabella Eclano (Italy). The studies indicate that implementing AI models for disease prediction can optimize fungicide application\, resulting in an average decrease of 20% in the number of applications and water and allowing growers to apply fungicides only when necessary\, reducing environmental impact and resource water. \nOn the other hand\, partners presented the poster “VitiGEOSS Business Service: Task scheduling optimisation in vineyards”\, focused on the project’s Business Service offering a scheduling optimizer module of the VitiGEOSS platform to support vineyard managers in organising their work forces and minimizing costs. \nFinally\, partners showcased the poster “Deep learning based model for grapevine phenology”\, which introduces some results obtained by the use of satellite remote sensing for phenology monitoring showing a great potential to revolutionize the grape-growing industry and helping growers to adapt to the challenges of climate change. \nDownload the posters exhibited: \n\n“VitiGEOSS Project: Vineyard innovative tools based on the integration of Earth Observation Services and in-field sensors”\nUse of Artificial Intelligence for the prediction of microbial diseases of grapevine and optimization of fungicide application\nVITIGEOSS Business Service: Task scheduling optimization in vineyards\nDeep learning based model for grapevine phenology\n\n  \n
