DESCRIPTION:VitiGEOSS project coordinator Eurecat attended the Expo AgriTech 2024 which took place on 26 – 28th November 2024 in Malaga\, Spain. \nAt the exhibition Eurecat had its own stand and showcased VitiGEOSS’ platform\, an innovative digital solution aimed at advancing precision viticulture and fostering more sustainable and resilient vineyard management. Among all the services of the platform\, Eurecat developed the business and sustainability manager service and the disease management tool\, both of them highlighted during the event. \nThe first one supports wine makers and farmers to plan best timing for field operations\, to achieve a better planning of resources needed\, reduce the use of raw materials\, and promote a sustainable winegrowing. On the other hand\, the disease management is a tool for forecasting the downy and powdery mildew evolution considering the meteorological conditions and crop status optimising the number of treatments and resources used to assure its effectively. \nMoreover\, Josep Pijuan\, researcher in Eurecat’s Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit\, participated in the panel discussion “Transforming Wine Production with Smart Vineyards.” His presentation\, focused on VitiGEOSS included practical applications of the platform\, emphasizing its potential to revolutionize vineyard management through data-driven insights and artificial intelligence. \n \nExpo AgriTech is the premier event for technology\, industry\, and innovation in the agricultural sector\, bringing together industry leaders with the aim of helping farming operations enhance their competitiveness and productivity.

The platform\, available on demand\, offers capabilities like long-term weather forecasting\, monitoring crop phenology\, and assessing plant physiology\, including water requirements. These features allow winemakers to make informed decisions\, optimize vineyard performance\, and enhance sustainability. \nOne of the key aspects discussed was the platform’s ability to detect diseases early and generate alerts for targeted treatments\, reducing the use of resources and minimizing environmental impact. During the presentation\, Pujol also emphasized the decision-making tools incorporated into VitiGEOSS\, which assist in planning tasks such as harvesting and fieldwork while prioritizing resource efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. \n \nThe VitiGEOSS platform was validated throughout 2022 and 2023 collaboratively with renowned wineries\, including Familia Torres in Catalonia\, Symington in Portugal\, and Mastroberardino in Italy. \nThe conference was organized by the Catalan Enology Association (ACE)\, the College of Oenologists of Catalonia (CEEC) and the Vine and Wine Catalan Institute (INCAVI) and gathered experts providing significant perspective on the knowledge that oenologists need regarding how\, when\, where\, and why to incorporate sensorization into their work. \n

DESCRIPTION:The VitiGEOSS project was presented during the conference “EU investments in strategic projects: an outlook from Catalonia”\, organised by the Government of Catalonia – Ministry for Foreign Action and European Union in collaboration with the European Commission Representation in Barcelona last 13th of June in Barcelona. \nEurecat\, acting as the project’s coordinator\, has its own space at the exhibition area of the conference and showcased project’s materials to all attendees. \nThe VitiGEOSS project has led to an innovative vineyard management platform based on the integration of Earth Observation services and in-field sensors offering wine growers and other actors in the sector easily accessible\, real time\, reliable and easy-to-understand information that can help support their operations and decision-making processes. \nAdditionally\, Eurecat presented FlexCrash\, GuestXR\, Sharework and MARBEL\, four strategic European projects coordinated by the centre\, and the FormPlanet Open Innovation Test Bed. \nThe conference had the objective to highlight the contribution of the Catalan industry to the European Research & Innovation ecosystem\, and also to identify and discuss about the main challenges that these sectors face.

DESCRIPTION:The VitiGEOSS project organised the workshop “Earth Observation data for sustainable practices in viticulture” celebrated on the 2nd of October 2023 as part of the EuroGEO Workshop taking place in Bolzano\, Italy. SUMMARY:Presenting four VitiGEOSS posters during the GiESCO Conference
DESCRIPTION:The VitiGEOSS project was represented during the 22nd GiESCO Conference (Group of International Experts for Cooperation on Vitivinicultural Systems) taking place from 17th – 20th of July at Cornell University in Ithaca\, NY. \nBoris Basile\, associate professor at the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II\, and Fernando Alves\, R&D Viticulture Manager at Symington Family Estates\, attended the event presenting VitiGEOSS as a key European project working for a greater sustainability and optimisation in wine operations. \nIn addition\, during the conference\, a total of 4 posters based on VitiGEOSS research were presented\, introducing the main results and achievements of the project. \nThe poster entitled “Vineyard innovative tools based on the integration of Earth Observation Services and in-field sensors”\, introduced the general overview of VitiGEOSS including information about the project’s solution for wine producers to boost vineyards’ sustainability and the five services offered by the VitiGEOSS platform. \nSecondly\, the poster “Use of Artificial Intelligence for the prediction of microbial diseases of grapevine and optimization of fungicide application”\, presented some results of the three cases studies of wine production carried out in Quinta do Bomfim (Portugal)\, L’Aranyó (Spain) and Mirabella Eclano (Italy). DESCRIPTION:Fernando Alves and Joana Valente\, VitiGEOSS partners from Symington Family Estates participated in the second edition of the Douro Somm Camp\, an event part of Symington’s School of Port educational platform\, celebrated from 3rd – 6th of July in the Douro Valley region (Portugal). \nThe Douro Somm Camp\, an immersive educational boot camp for the best European sommeliers\, had the objective to show port’s relevance to a modern and younger audience and offered the opportunity to explore Porto and the Douro\, learning about production and having exclusive access to some of the Douro’s most historic wineries and estates. \nDuring the masterclass about “Climate Change in the Douro”\, Joana Valente presented the VitiGEOSS’s solution\, which aims to use satellite imagery combined with in-field sensors to support farmers by providing early warning and give them the tools to make better decisions in crop management. DESCRIPTION:Boris Basile\, project partner and associate professor at the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II\, presented a poster based on VitiGEOSS research during the XIV Giornate scientifiche SOI celebrated from 21 – 23 of June in Turin (Italy). \nThe event\, organised by the Italian Horticultural Society (SOI) and the University of Turin\, involved large sectors of agriculture and covered different topics such as the sustainable use of resources in the production process\, the quality of the productions and the multifunctionality of the horticultural-floral-fruit sector. \nThe VitiGEOSS poster presented\, titled “Innovative tools for viticulture based on the integration of data obtained from terrestrial observation and proximity sensors”\, introduced the project’s methodology and some results achieved. \nAdditionally\, the poster showcases the main five information services of the VitiGEOSS platform such as the weather and climate forecast\, phenological monitoring and prediction/forecasting\, crop status\, disease management and business and sustainability. \nDownload the poster here \nThe main ambition of the VitiGEOSS project is to contribute to a responsible production of wine by minimising the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides and offering tools for a better management and optimisation of resources for greater sustainability.

The presentation also included an explanation of the platform information services\, as well as the main benefits expected. \nThe VitiGEOSS platform is the first application offering integrated services for sub-seasonal and seasonal predictions\, crop management\, disease warnings\, business operations and sustainability monitoring. \nMoreover\, the session included the participation of representatives from the different projects and initiatives such as SIGP – The Integrated Property Management System powered by GeoDOURO\, VineSignal\, INCAFO Project\, VirtuaCrop and i-GRAPE. \nThe ADVID is a non-profit organisation aimed at contributing to the modernisation of viticulture and to the increased portability of vineyards in the Demarcated Douro Region and to the improved quality of its wines.

DESCRIPTION:VitiGEOSS partners participated in the Enoforum\, the largest technical-scientific congress in Europe for the wine sector\, celebrated from 16th – 18th of May in Vicenza (Italy). \nDuring the congress\, project’s partners organised two demo sessions\, one in Italian and another in English\, to provide an overview of the services integrated into the VitiGEOSS platform and present use cases of how the platform can be used by wine producers for better informed decision-making. Each of the demo session counted with almost 20 participants that could explore the features that the VitiGEOSS platform offers and express interest in becoming a test user to try it out during the next following year. \nBoris Basile\, associate professor of viticulture at University of Naples Federico II (UNINA); Laia Garriga\, Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit Promoter of Eurecat; Jessica Snoek\, project manager at eLEAF\, and Andria Nicodemou\, climate science communication specialist at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC)\, moderated the two demo sessions. \nOn the other hand\, Boris Basile presented VitiGEOSS during the flash talk titled “Vineyard innovative tools based on the integration of Earth Observation Services and in-field sensors”\, giving a general overview about the project and explaining the work done in developing innovative tools for vineyard management based on the integration of Earth Observation Services and in-field sensors. \n \nThe project counted with its own stand during the three days of the congress from where partners showcased what are we doing at the VitiGEOSS project for a greater sustainability and optimisation in wine operations.  \nThe Enoforum brought together producers\, technicians\, oenologists and agronomists\, researchers and technology providers\, with the objective to promote the development of innovation in the wine and viticulture sector.

DESCRIPTION:The VitiGEOSS project was presented during the Open Day “Technological infrastructures for the digitalization of the agricultural sector” organised by Eurecat and celebrated last 23rd of March in the Lleida AgroBioTech Park (Spain). \nJosep Pijuan\, researcher from the Applied Artificial Intelligence Unit of Eurecat\, participated in the session “Validating digital solution in real environments: experiences and lessons learned” presenting VitiGEOSS as one of Eurecat’s key research and innovation projects in agri-food sector. \nThe presentation included a general overview about the VitiGEOSS project which is developing an innovative vineyard management solution based on the integration of Earth Observation services and in-field sensors with the objective to increase the resolution and reliability of satellite information applied to the viticulture sector. \nDownload the presentation delivered here \nThe Open Day\, part of agROBOfood Digital Innovation Hub activities\, brought together more than 100 producers\, companies and research entities with the objective to present experiences and best practices in validating digital solutions. \nThe event also included presentations from other projects and initiatives related to the digitalisation of agriculture.

DESCRIPTION:Eurecat\, the VitiGEOSS project coordinator\, has participated at the Mobile World Congress 2023\, which took place from February 27th – March 2nd in Barcelona\, Spain. \nThe project has been included in Eurecat’s catalogue which has been distributed to attendees approaching its booth during the Congress. \nTake a look at the catalogue distributed here \nVitiGEOSS has been presented as one of the key research projects in the agriculture sector of the centre. The project\, funded under the Horizon 2020 programme\, is developing an innovative vineyard tool based on the integration of Earth Observation Services and in-field sensors \nThe Mobile World Congress (MWC) is an annual event which attracts some of the most influential decision makers worldwide and professionals from mobile operators\, software companies and equipment providers\, among others. \n  \n

SUMMARY:VitiGEOSS takes part in the annual EuroGEO workshop
DESCRIPTION:The VitiGEOSS project was presented during the session “EuroGEO for agriculture in support of the partnership “Agriculture of Data” and the European Green Deal” held within the EuroGEO Workshop and celebrated last 7th of December in Athens\, Greece. \nThe session had the objective to map the way forward on how EO based services support the sector to become more sustainable\, as well as present and discuss the partnership for “Agriculture of Data” and define which research needs and European wide activities should be addressed. \nErwin Goor\, VitiGEOSS project’s officer and project advisor of the European Research Executive Agency (REA)\, participated in the session presenting VitiGEOSS as a key European project developing vineyard innovative tools based on the integration of Earth Observation services and in-field sensors. SUMMARY:Eurecat presents VitiGEOSS during the “Fira de Novembre” online exhibition 2022
DESCRIPTION:The VitiGEOSS project has been presented during the “Fira de Novembre de Vilanova i la Geltrú” online exhibition which took place from 11th – 13th of November 2022 and brought together a huge variety of expositors from different economic and industry sectors. \nVitiGEOSS’s coordinator Eurecat presented the project as one of the key research and innovation projects in agri-food sector of the Technology Centre\, developing an innovative vineyard management tool based on Earth Observation services and in-field sensors. SUMMARY:VitiGEOSS-related poster presented during the International Congress of the Catalan Association of Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:VitiGEOSS researchers have presented the poster “Data driven predictive models based on Artificial Intelligence to anticipate the presence of Plasmopara viticola and Uncinula necator in southern European winegrowing regions” during the 24th International Congress of the Catalan Association of Artificial Intelligence (24CCIA). The CCIA Congress\, the meeting point of the Catalan Artificial Intelligence community\, has been celebrated from 19th – 21st of October in Sitges (Spain). \nThe poster\, which is produced under the framework of the VitiGEOSS project\, introduces the new predictive modelling tools and methods that allow anticipating disease appearance in the vineyard\, while minimising the losses in fruit yield and quality\, and helping farmers to define appropriate and more sustainable disease management strategies. The work also presents the results obtained of the comparison of the three different study areas which are centered in the Mediterranean and Atlantic region of vine production in Europe. \nThe work\, produced by Marta Otero\, Jordi Ricard Onrubia\, Alex Josep Pujol\, Luisa Fernanda Velásquez and Josep Pijuan\, from the Applied Artificial Intelligence of Eurecat\, and Boris Basile\, from the University of Naples Federico II\, has been granted as the best short paper award. \nDownload the poster here \nThe Catalan Association of Artificial Intelligence (ACIA) is a non-profit association focused on promote the advancement of Artificial Intelligence sector in the Catalan society and has the objective to support communication between all the agents involved in this field\, promoting social\, cultural\, scientific\, economic and governmental awareness. \n  \n

SUMMARY:VitiGEOSS participated in a workshop organised as part of the SnapEarth project
DESCRIPTION:Partners represented the VitiGEOSS project at the workshop “New EO-based High-Resolution soil moisture products to address climate risk and food security” taking place online on the 1st of June 2022. \nThe workshop was organised by IsardSAT and Lobelia Earth in the framework of the SnapEarth project. \nVitiGEOSS partners participated in the workshop and took the opportunity to introduce VitiGEOSS\, as a project making use of the potential of European Earth Observation services for deploying an innovative commercial information solution to optimise sustainable grapevine cultivation.   \nThe workshop had the objective to provide insights on the relevance of Earth Observation-based Soil Moisture data for risk anticipation\, resource optimisation and data modelling\, as well as to gather feedback on how to improve the products to address market needs\, enabling the dialogue with different stakeholders on requirements limitations\, expectations and applications of EO-based data. \nIn addition\, the workshop included the presentation of the EarthFood Security platform\, developed by the European project SnapEarth\, which provides information on soil moisture\, drought and fire index\, based on EO data. \nThe SnapEarth project is working to facilitate access to Earth Observation data from the general public thanks to EO data labelling and indexation innovations. The main goal of the project is to bring out new values through large-scale earth observation data services and to anticipate future priorities by leveraging artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies and tools. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Partners from BSC present VitiGEOSS during the Barcelona Science Festival
DESCRIPTION:The VitiGEOSS project was presented during a session held as part of the 15th Barcelona Science Festival\, which was celebrated on the 28th – 29th of May 2022 and organised by the Barcelona City Council. \nProject partners from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) participated in the discussion session titled “How do we adapt to climate change”\, and took the opportunity to introduce the work conducted in VitiGEOSS\, as one of their key research projects developing innovative solutions to reduce and mitigate climate change in vineyards.  \nThe session also included the presentation of the research performed in other climate-related projects in which the BSC participates\, such as MED-GOLD\, S2S4E and CALIOPE. \nThe Barcelona Science Festival is a great encounter of science and culture\, open to the general public and all ages. This year’s edition offered a programme with more than 200 activities\, 27 different areas and more than 150 entities of the city related with science\, research and knowledge. \n  \n  \n
